The goal of the Hot Media Group is to assist those who require assistance in building their own web presence. We will provide information that will either teach you how to build your own, or for us to build one with you. For someone who has little computer knowledge, this process can seem impossible. Hot Media Group will do its best to make your experience as painless as possible.

The Hot Media Group steps to building your website:

  1. Many will tell you that the first order of business will be to register a domain name. We don't agree. The first order of business would be to develop your business or website "concept". The domain name will most likely come out of the design of your concept.

  2. When your website concept is complete in your head or preferably on paper, choose your domain name! This can be a very exciting part of the process. Coming up with a name that the internet public will embrace can be exciting. Your choice should be a name which says exactly what your website is to accomplish. To register a domain name, we reccomend using It will only cost $9.95 per year to have it registered to your name. has a real easy to use account system for controlling where your names are hosted as for having multiple names to the same account.

  3. Most would say that you have to find a host. Once again, we don't agree. Unless you know HTML, CFML, PHP, ASP, or SHTML and have been building your site over the past few months, you won't need a host for a while. Hot Media Group offers hosting and would love to serve you, but you have plenty of time to find an appropriate host that can suit your needs.

Your next task will save you money in the development stage. It is when you define the needs, functions, operations, scheduled tasks, and desired look of the site. This stage is called the "Analysis". Define all that you need to have done on your project.

If you are building this yourself, a self interview will be in order to find out everything about your site/concept. If you are having a professional developer do the site for you like the Hot Media Group. You should plan to spend at minimum a few to several meetings with the them to define what you want.

This is also a great time to decide which type language you'd like to use. If the site will contain information that will never change, a "static" site will do just fine. For this type of site, you should be able to build it yourself after reading several hundred pages of HTML. Should you require a website that allows for the adding of information, and constant updates of the same types of information, a database application is what you need. For either of your needs, static or database, Hot Media Group would love to build it for you.

  4. The next step is the "Design" of your site or system. This is when you or your developer lays out the entire project on paper. The functions and operations of the site should already be defined considering the analysis step. Keep in mind that this step contains no computer language. It only has plain english that the developer and you the customer can understand. In most cases, what is defined here will be part of the original application design. Most cases find out later down the road that they want more features. If you have a conventional HTML developer doing your site, you should understand that adding features at a later date can cost much more. However, if you are having a developer build your system using ColdFusion as we use here at the Hot Media Group. The application can change directions at most any part of the project without having to reconstruct the whole application which can cost alot of extra money.

  5. The next step is the "Coding" of your website. This part can be the most exciting part of the project. The reason being that you actually see the site turning into a tangible website. Most people try to jump directly to this step while skipping the first two. This is a huge mistake. Without defining what it is you want and putting it on paper, the cost can run much bigger than originally predicted. There have been many web application projects cancelled due to a lack of funds from this.

Your developers should be able to perform this step fastest. The reason is that you don't have to be relied on to tell what you want. The developer should already know exactly what you want. Your web application can now have a trackable progress. You should be able to see the sections of it come together as your developer finishes them. Until ultimatly your site is complete.

  6. This next step is the testing phase. You should not ever see any code on the internet. Errors should be trapped and the webmaster should be notified of them. Usually a certain process for testing your application is followed. It is tested for bad code, and speed. As long as the site can't be brought to it's knees, the next step is in order.

  7. The last step is when your site is moved to a production server which is called "deployment". Tell your freinds and family about your site!! It is on the internet if it is on a production server. Your application should be rock solid and unbreakable. Impervious to outside "crackers".

Just so you know, a "hacker" is a person like you and me. A "cracker" is a person who wishes to do harm to web servers and web applications on the net.

  8. After you feel that your site is adequate to represent what you want it to, there are some things to keep in mind. Most feel that websites should be updated often. Updated is a fairly loose term. This can mean a complete redesign every 6 months to a year, or just adding new features. While we prefer to advise our clients of the latter, in some cases complete rebuilds are necessary.
